From the Desk of John Fogarty, Regional Chair of North Atlantic SCUP Regional Council

February 21, 2020

Join hundreds of campus planners and academic leaders on March 8-10 in New Haven, Conn., at SCUP’s North Atlantic Conference, where the driving topic will be “Finding Your Niche: Institutional Strategies to Survive and Thrive.” New Haven is an excellent location to have this discussion, as its diverse group of colleges and universities have distinct identities, histories, and serve distinct communities. Each institution deals with maintaining enrollment and retention, rejuvenating campus and curriculum, and supporting a new generation of students who are quite different from their predecessors.

Sunday’s keynote address will be held on Yale’s campus in one of its newest science buildings. The focus will be “30 Years of Planning at Yale.” Former and current Yale University planners and directors will lead us through a university-wide analysis of its storied campus, beginning in the 1990s, where issues such as deferred maintenance, programmatic expansion, and future aspirations triggered a flexible framework plan, that reinforced its iconic campus while providing for potential areas for future development, and enhancing its interconnectivity with the surrounding urban fabric.

Monday’s sessions begin with an academic roundtable of presidents, provosts and senior academic leaders from a quartet of Connecticut’s leading institutions: Yale, UConn, New Haven, and Southern Connecticut State. This keynote session will share how each institution has adapted to the multitude of internal and external forces surrounding them. How have they guided their schools to continued excellence, and how do they intend to meet the challenges and opportunities of the coming years?

Tuesday’s closing keynote will focus on the experience of today’s college age students. They represent distinct groups of income diversity, first generation, gender/sexual orientation, nationality, race and ethnicity, ability status, religion, political spectrum, and marital/family status. Our academic panelists will discuss programmatic solutions to support diverse student identities, and demonstrate the facilities needed to house these populations, all designed to reinforce student success. They will discuss the challenges and top priorities for future diversity planning.

Please plan to join me and others from the North Atlantic region where planning comes together!
