Triumph Completes First Modular Sprout Space™ Classroom

Littleton, Ma – Triumph Modular has completed its first modular Sprout Space™ classroom. Designed by leading international architecture and design firm, Perkins + Will, Sprout Space is a high-performance and healthy modular classroom and the modular category winner of the Open Architecture Challenge: Design the classroom of the future by Architecture for Humanity and the Open Architecture Network. Triumph Modular worked with the designers from the conception to make the design constructible and affordable. As the official distributor of Sprout Space, Triumph Modular is responsible for factory-fabrication and installation of the classrooms.

Beginning March 3, 2013, Sprout Space will be displayed on the lawn of the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. throughout the year as part of the Green Schools exhibit.

“We are excited to bring Sprout Space to market,” said Cliff Cort, president of Triumph Modular. “For nearly a decade, our team has been making strides in the manufacturing and installation of energy-efficient modular buildings. Sprout Space is one of the most viable solutions I’ve seen to address a set of challenges that our industry has faced in improving the quality of modular school space.”

In 2004, Triumph Modular launched a campaign to be the first in the country to produce a LEED level, green portable classroom. Since then, Triumph has collaborated on numerous building projects which showcase the green benefits of greater prefabrication in construction including a 13,000 SF early childcare center in North Andover, Massachusetts; a 6,000 SF addition at the Oak Hill Middle School in Newton, Massachusetts; and a 5,800 SF child care center at Harvard University, the winner of the 2011 USGBC Massachusetts Chapter “Innovation in Green Design Award”.

Sprout Space Modular Classrooms

The primary function of Sprout Space, a template capable of being customized to each school’s unique needs, is to provide additional space, either for swing space for uncertain time periods or as an alternative to a permanent conventional building.   Sprout Space can be leased for time periods exceeding 36 months, but has a life span comparable to that of permanent structures. Notable features include:

  • Sustainable Learning Environments: Sprout Space operates with significantly lower utility costs due to sustainable design features such as sun shades, integrated rainwater collection, photovoltaic roof panels, LED lighting coupled with lighting controls, efficient heating and cooling systems, use of sustainable materials, generous daylighting, operable windows and natural ventilation. These strategies help the building operate as a net-zero energy building, with the eventual goal to provide an energy independent classroom.

  • Flexibility in Design, Usage and Teaching Styles: Sprout Space was developed specifically to enhance learning through its unique design. This design encourages various teaching styles and seating arrangements, impromptu collaboration among peers, and outdoor learning.    This classroom’s environment is adaptive and equipped to meet more needs of the students.

  • Healthy Learning Environments: Unlike typical school trailers, Sprout Space was designed with children’s health and various learning styles in mind. The materials in Sprout Space have been carefully selected to prevent off-gassing and create the healthiest indoor air quality possible. Sprout Space also utilizes the most efficient heating and cooling technology while providing ample fresh air, which has been proven to increase children’s performance in the classroom.
