Lincoln, RI – John P. Shevlin, P.E.-Senior Vice President for Pare Corporation (PARE)-was recetnly named 2013 Engineer of the Year by the Rhode Island Society of Professional Engineers (RISPE) at the Providence Engineering Society’s annual awards dinner. The RISPE Engineer of the Year Award recognizes an engineer who has made significant and lasting contributions to the Rhode Island engineering community and has furthered the mission of RISPE to “promote the ethical and competent practice of engineering.”
RISPE is an organization representing over 150 members from all engineering disciplines including civil, chemical, electrical, mechanical, and fire control engineers. RISPE members practice throughout Rhode Island and the New England region in industry, construction, private practice, education and government. As the state society of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), RISPE has been serving its members and the people of Rhode Island since 1934.
Shevlin started his professional career with PARE in 1987. With the exception of a three-year period working on the Boston Central Artery “Big Dig” project for its program management consultant, Shevlin has worked his entire career at PARE, rising from entry-level Engineer to Senior Vice President in charge of PARE’s Transportation Division. His experience includes design and management responsibilities for a wide variety of noteworthy projects throughout New England including the East Bay Bike Path, transportation improvements at Twin River and Foxwoods Casinos, Vermont Route 346 Reconstruction, Aquidneck Island Transportation Guide Plan, Sturbridge Village Tourist Commercial District Improvement Plan, and numerous bridge replacements, traffic studies, transportation plans, and public and private site developments.
In addition to his professional accomplishments as an engineer, Shevlin was also recognized by RISPE for his continued service to the community at large. He has been a dedicated volunteer in his town of residence, Cumberland, RI, serving as a Planning Board member from 1995 to 2004 and as Vice Chair from 2001 to 2004. He continues to serve his community today, organizing and coaching youth league sports throughout the year. Additionally, from 2004 to 2008 Shevlin served in various officer positions on the Board of Directors of the Providence Engineering Society, ultimately serving as President in 2008. Currently, he is Secretary on the Board of Rhode Island Consulting Engineers, and he is a member of their active Transportation Liaison Committee.
