Roslindale, MA – Greener Horizon, LLC , a landscape contracting company of Middleboro was given a challenge: design and install an irrigation system that delivered beautiful results and at the same time water in such a way to be environmentally responsible, efficient, and keep costs down. The result: a revolutionary 2,000 head “Smart” irrigation system designed for Stony Brook Commons (SBC), a family friendly multi-residential gated community on 60 acres in Roslindale.
Smart irrigation systems consist of controller clocks that automatically adjust irrigation “on” times in response to environmental changes. They use information gathered from on-site weather stations and soil moisture sensors. Landscape irrigation can account for 50% of all water consumed in traditional residential water usage. Smart irrigation reduces that outdoor water use by an average of 15 to 30 percent.
“With this new system, we’re keeping our water cost down….” says Phil Nieman, senior property manager for Stony Brook Commons. “Having sensors that can actually tell how much moisture is in the soil prevents us from over-watering as well, that can cause disease.”
