Boston – RDK Engineers’ (RDK) President, Gregory Titterington and Senior Project Manager, Kevin McNamara recently gave a two hour presentation on HVAC fundamental systems, with a sustainable strategies focus to seven students enrolled in the Master of Architecture program at The Boston Architectural College (BAC).
The students participating in the program are working towards their Masters of Architcture degree with the expectation of sitting for their licensure exam. Most of the course work for the program is done online to allow students to maintain full time employment, but the students come to Boston from all over the country each semester for an intensive face-to-face one week residency. During the week, the students listened to various lectures, visited project sites, and worked on their final project which is to design a proposed 3-4 story, 30,000-40,000 square foot mixed-use building for the College.
The presentation given by RDK covered engineering basics, a review of MEP systems, building energy analysis, sustainable architectural elements that reduce energy usage by MEP systems, sustainable engineering elements, and how to go about selecting the best systems for their project.
RDK followed up with a visit to the school later that week to meet with students and continue the building systems discussion. Mr. McNamara spent three hours working one-on-one with each of the BAC’s Master of Architecture students critiquing their selected mechanical systems and talking through different strategies on each project.
In addition, Mr. McNamara and Mr. Titterington will be working with the students through the school’s online portal throughout the remainder of the course. They will continue to review and comment on the progress of the students’ final projects and answer any engineering questions that may arise now that the students have returned home and are finalizing their projects.
“RDK is proud to be part of the BAC’s Master of Architecture program and have the chance to mentor and guide the students through their final projects. We know that the skills and knowledge they have learned here will only help them when designing buildings in the future” said McNamara.
Mr. McNamara and Mr. Titterington will be participating again for the next session in January.
