Phase 1 of Baystate Medical Center Wins Two Awards – Suffolk GC, Vanderweil MEP

Boston – Suffolk Construction recently won two prestigious awards for the Baystate Medical Center Phase One project. Buildings magazine honored the project team with a grand-prize “America’s Best Buildings of the Year” (ABBY) award, and Engineering News-Record New York selected the project for a “Best Project” award. The Suffolk team was recognized for excellence in project management, outstanding team collaboration, and successful use of innovative technologies.

The Suffolk team was recognized for excellence in project management, outstanding team collaboration, and successful use of innovative technologies.

The Baystate Medical Center Phase One project is a $296 million, 641,000 square-foot clinical facility housing a new heart and vascular center, 32 cardiovascular critical-care rooms, and 96 private,= inpatient rooms. The project scope also included joining the existing main entrance of the hospital with the new main entrance of the state-of-the-art heart and vascular center. Designed in close collaboration with patients and families, the seven-story facility was completed while the hospital remained fully operational at all times. The impressive project is predominantly new construction, including multiple tunnels and bridges, with tie-ins to two existing buildings.

Phase One is the first project to be completed for Baystate Medical Center’s 15-year master plan. Baystate Medical Center is the largest medical facility in Western Massachusetts. For the Baystate Medical Center Phase One project, Suffolk is the construction manager, and the architect is Steffian Bradley Architects.

The October 2012 issue of Buildings magazine features the 2012 ABBY award winners. Engineering News-Record (ENR) will unveil the categories of each award winner in the November 10, 2012 issue. At this time, the notable Baystate Medical Center Phase One project will be entered into the national ENR competition—the 2012 “Best of the Best Projects” awards.
