Lincoln, RI – Professional engineers from Pare Corporation (PARE), an engineering firm headquartered in Lincoln, recently made presentations to middle school students at Woonsocket Middle School (Villa Nova) and Lincoln Middle School. The purpose of the visits was to educate and encourage the students to consider civil engineering as a career choice. Cari Powers Orsi and Kevin Champagne, both licensed Professional Engineers, brought the construction plans they helped develop for each of the middle schools and explained how engineering is a key component in the planning and building of a school. “Because we were the Engineer of Record for both the Woonsocket and Lincoln Middle Schools, they were the logical choice for our public outreach in connection with National Engineers Week,” said Trish Teeter, Marketing Coordinator at PARE. “We were able to show the students the actual plans for their own school sites, talk about the challenges that we dealt with at each site, and show progress photos of the construction.”
Orsi and Champagne talked to all of the 8th graders at Lincoln Middle School through several presentations over the course of two different days. They also met with one class of advanced science students at Woonsocket Middle School. “I guess they found value in the presentation, because they’ve invited us back for Science Night in April!” said Orsi, speaking of a request from Woonsocket Middle School science teacher, Maryhelen Chiulli. “They would like to make our presentation available to all of the students.”
Pare Corporation also donated copies of a new book, “From Sundaes to Space Stations,” to the school libraries. The book, written by Reed Brockman, explains the civil engineering profession and includes real-life stories from civil engineers, including a chapter by Orsi.
National Engineers Week Foundation supports engineering outreach, education, and celebration through a network of thousands of volunteers in its partner coalition of more than 100 professional societies, major corporations and government agencies. Together they meet a vital need: introducing students, parents and educators to engineering, engaging them in hands-on engineering experiences, and making science and math relevant.
