Boston, MA – The Green Roof @ Boston Latin School (BLS), designed by Studio G Architects, recently garnered national attention with the Today Show.
The Today Show filmed Studio G Architects and students from BLS Youth Climate Action
Network in a design charrette (photos above) for The Green Roof @ Boston Latin School,
an initiative of BLS Youth Climate Action Network. As a result of the students’ efforts, the
BLS Administration and Alumni Association support the project.
The Green Roof Sustainable Roofscape Learning Center provides multiple areas to instigate
student learning about the big ideas of sustainability and provide the venue and material
for a newly devised STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) curriculum. The
Green Roof provides opportunities for students to engage in inquiry-based learning about
storm runoff, heat effects, rain acidity, and CO2 exchange, and to monitor the energy
generated by the wind turbines, photovoltaic and solar thermal collectors. The roof also
includes a contemplative garden, and a cafeteria farm and rooftop greenhouse. This
layered design reflects an integrated approach to sustainable education: The Green Roof
demonstrates sustainability by lowering carbon emissions through planted microclimates
and generating energy to offset the school’s needs. It teaches the value of local fresh
produce in the cafeteria, while helping to improve students’ eating habits and combat
obesity. It transmits these values through a hands-on learning environment and cutting edge
curriculum that prepares students to succeed in an increasingly global economy. BLS
alumnus Sumner Redstone recently donated $500,000, in part to support The Green Roof.
