Beverly, MA – The Merrimack Valley Planning Commission (MVPC) has selected Meridian Associates, Inc.to evaluate 11 landfill sites within nine MVPC member communities for potential development of wind power and ground mounted solar photovoltaics (PV). The MVPC is seeking to help communities determine the viability of reusing their closed landfills as
development sites for renewable power generation that could help cut municipal energy costs.
This ground-breaking regional initiative is designed to provide local leaders objective technical expertise, advice, and guidance on the potential for renewable energy projects in their communities.
For each of the nine MVPC communities, Meridian Associates will provide site, regulatory, and power generation assessments to determine if any of the landfills have a “fatal flaw” that would preclude the development of either wind or PV at the sites.
Based on the results, community leaders will be in a position to make informed, “fact-based”
decisions about the costs and benefits of investing in renewable energy projects at their landfills.
