Lowell, MA – The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) has named Arup as a Finalist for the 2021 Engineering Excellence Award for their work on the Lowell Judicial Center.
Located within the Lowell National Historic Park, the new, 265,000sf justice center is now home to 17 new courtrooms with state-of-the-art security and technology features. The courthouse is designed to only use 40% the energy of a typical facility due to the sustainability features including a tight building envelope, daylight-maximizing glazing, chilled beams and displacement ventilation, and photo-voltaic panels. The project is certified LEED Platinum.
“We were able to respond immediately to the challenge of creating a low energy building without the ramp-up time other firms may have required both due to our project team’s knowledge of and commitment to sustainable and energy efficient design. The result of this collaboration sets a new standard for agency staff to apply as they move forward in implementing sustainable design, construction, and operations in state buildings,” said Mark Walsh-Cooke, Arup principal and project director.
