Farmington, MA – KBE Building Corporation (KBE), one of the nation’s leading firms providing preconstruction, construction management, design-build, and general contracting services, announced today that it has contracted for a design-build addition to Patapsco Hall, a residence hall on the campus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Maryland (UMBC). KBE is the Design-Builder and Prime Contractor for the 183-bed project, with Newman Architects of New Haven, CT leading the Design Team. The project will be managed through KBE’s Mid-Atlantic Regional office in Columbia, MD.

The Patapsco Hall addition will include four stories and a limited basement. There will be 68 double rooms, eight triples, 24 singles and three studio apartments for graduate resident staff that will include a kitchen and bathroom in each unit. This building will be the first LEED certified residence facility at UMBC. The additions will be connected to the west end of Patapsco Hall. Construction on the renovation portion of the project is expected to start in June, 2010.

Some of the project highlights include a new basketball court with tiered seating and the creation of a courtyard. The existing residence hall will be upgraded, including a new lobby and a new elevator and stair on the north corner of the east wing. Existing residence showers and toilet rooms in each wing will be renovated, including replacing the existing showers with new solid surface shower pans.

This project is the seventh design-build residence hall that KBE has served as Design-Builder and Prime Contractor. The firm has partnered with Newman Architects on six of those projects, two of which pursued and achieved LEED Certification.

“KBE is proud to partner once again with Newman Architects in this arena where we have a demonstrated history of excellence,” said KBE Vice President Allan Kleban. “We understand the growth process for area colleges and universities and have established a system that allows us to work well within the campus daily routine without being a disruption.”
