IBEW Local 103 Celebrates WIT Students

Dorchester, Ma – IBEW Local 103 hosted the first alumni reception for union members August 7, 2013 at IBEW Local 103 in Dorchester. The event was for union members who completed Associate of Science and Bachelor of Science Degrees at Wentworth Institute of Technology. Since January 2010, forty-six IBEW Local 103 members have completed the AS of Science Program at Wentworth and fourteen moved on to complete BS Degrees.

IBEW Local 103 member Thomas Olson who received an Associate of Science Degree at WIT in Engineering Technology said, “I’m a single dad working full-time and I was able to complete the AS program with honors.  It has opened so many doors because now I am teaching telecommunications in the Boston Public Schools.  I am so thankful to IBEW Local 103 for providing this incredible opportunity to further my education.”

 Michael Monahan, Business Manager, IBEW Local 103 said, “We are so proud of our Local 103 members who took advantage of this opportunity to further their education while working full-time and juggling family commitments. This program  is part of an ongoing effort to provide Local 103 members with as many meaningful education and training opportunities possible.”

Leo Purcell, Past Director of Training, Joint Apprentice and Training Committee (JATC) of Greater Boston said, “These trained electricians have made sacrifices to further their education. Education is key to being successful and they will have a significant role in the industry.”

 Glenn Kingsbury, Chapter Manager, New England Contractors Association (NECA) said,  “This is tremendous for our industry.  WIT Dean of CPCE, Larry Carr said, ”This is about turning reach into reality, creating opportunities and providing a unique advantage. We launched the partnership in 2008 and it is a robust on-ramp for learning providing lifetime opportunities for union members and their families.”

 The special partnership also saved union members approximately a half-million dollars in higher education costs. Union members received a 33% discount on courses and credit for apprenticeship training. Classes were held nights and weekends allowing union members to manage full-time jobs and family responsibilities while taking classes.

Guest Speaker LCDR, Jonathan Fussell, who has had several tours in Afghanistan and lead over 100 combat missions offered important advice to alumni. Fussell said, ”Dedication, training, education and striving to go above and beyond is key to being successful and paves the way for future generations in your industry.”
