Burlington, MA – Fay, Spofford & Thorndike (FST) will serve as lead design engineer on the team selected by MassDOT for the design-build replacement of the Burns Memorial Bridge which carries Route 9 over Lake Quinsigamond between Shrewsbury and Worcester. The team is led by Middlesex Corporation, the project’s design-build contractor. FST will take the lead in structural, civil, and traffic engineering.
The new structure is planned as a five-span, steel tied deck arch that references the aesthetics and history of the existing structure while providing a much needed enhancement to the area’s infrastructure. With the bridge’s location in a heavily commercial area which is also in close proximity to densely populated neighborhoods, traffic management and complex construction staging will be vital. The project will also involve substantial utility relocation and the addition of new utilities to the bridge.
