Lawrence, MA – After almost two years in pre-construction, Eckman Construction of Bedford, N.H. is beginning work on the former Southwick Mill, in building #9 at 50 Island Street in Lawrence, Mass. This will be the first phase of a mixed use development, known as Union Crossing, by Lawrence Community Works. When complete, the building will contain sixty apartments, a day care, commercial space, and several community spaces.
The affordable apartments will be a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units. Eckman will completely renovate the five-story building, including new electrical, plumbing and heating systems. Historic features of the mill, including the brick façade and the original hardwood floors, will remain.
The project owner is East Island Rentals, LLC, an affiliate of the non-profit Lawrence Community Works. It was designed by Coldham & Hartman Architects, LLC of Amherst. Eckman will strive to use local firms to complete portions of the work, and has held job fairs to identify subcontractors and promote opportunities.
