Boston – Tocci Building Companies (Tocci) recently announced that “Building Information Modeling (BIM) for Facilities Management” will be the focus of the fall 2012 BIMForum, happening Oct. 10-11 in Tacoma, Wash.
John Tocci, chief enabling officer of Tocci Building Companies, is chairman of the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America’s BIMForum, which promotes practical implementation of BIM technology and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD).
The focus of this fall’s BIMForum is using BIM for facility management. Many in the building industry are familiar with BIM benefits in the design phase, but fewer are aware of BIM benefits during the life of the building. An estimated 75 percent* of a building’s lifecycle budget is spent on operations management, and presenters at the fall forum will demonstrate how BIM can result in significant savings for facilities managers.
In keeping with the mission of the BIMForum to provide practical information, many presentations are given by a builder or designer/owner team. For example, “BIM to FM at the Denver International Airport (DIA)” is co-presented by IMMERSIVx and DIA. Daniel Stonecipher with IMMERSIVx, a technology and process development firm in New Hampshire worked on the project with Dennis Rodriguez who integrates design, construction, and commissioning with facility management at DIA.
“Effective use of BIM requires far more than technology” said Tocci. “BIM demands early, disciplined collaboration from every major project participant. Thoughtful decision-making, starting with the end in mind, is both the most obvious and revolutionary improvement in facility performance in the past fifty years.”
The BIMForum incorporates leaders in BIM technology from across the industry including owners, architects, subcontractors and fabricators. The BIMForum also has several subforums addressing concerns in other aspects of the building process: legal, insurance and education.
