Holliston, MA – Colantonio, Inc. is being honored this month by the New England chapter of the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) for their work on the D. Justin McCarthy College Center at Framingham State University. The six-year, seven-phase renovation project was selected to receive a Project Achievement Award.
As a recipient of the Project Achievement Award, Colantonio is commended for its performance in Quality Management, Cost Management, Schedule Management, Complexity, Innovation/Creativity, Customer Service and Customer Satisfaction.
Colantonio, teamed up with CBT Architects of Boston, served as the Construction Manager for the expansion of this multi-purpose facility. Originally built in 1976, the six-story, 110,000 square foot building is the social center of the campus. A complete renovation was required to accommodate the needs of a growing student and faculty population. The firm transformed the campus police station, radio station, kitchen, dining hall, administration offices, conference rooms, classrooms, and bathrooms. The electrical and mechanical systems were upgraded and the building’s entire brick façade was replaced.
The challenge in completing each phase of the McCarthy Center Project was to keep the building operational and active while under construction. During construction of the new entrance to the building, Colantonio built a safe, temporary bridge for student and faculty access to the dining facility. This allowed for uninterrupted pedestrian traffic flow and for construction to start earlier than anticipated.
The work involving the police and radio station, classrooms, administrative offices, conference rooms and kitchen was completed during the winter, spring and summer breaks – at times working around the clock. Many unforeseen challenges presented themselves, but they did not prevent the team from meeting the deadlines.
The McCarthy Center Project is one of thirteen recipients of the annual Project Achievement Award. Presentations will be made at the CMAA 17th Annual Awards Luncheon on April 20 at the Radisson Hotel in Boston.
