Weymouth, MA – Colantonio Inc., of Holliston, recently wrapped up its restoration work on the Fogg Public Library in Weymouth, a 19th century landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The library’s exterior stone façade is constructed with Weymouth granite, and the architecture includes a mix of Dutch and classical elements.
Weather conditions over the last hundred years had eroded some of the exterior masonry and stonework, which was repaired and repointed. The heavy, slate roof had effectively flattened out the wood gable roof frame, which had to be replaced.
Since the roof intersects with masonry walls, its restoration to a gable frame was a challenge. After stripping the roof, a temporary one was constructed while the masonry repairs were made. The ridge was jacked up to its appropriate position and the new, lighter-weight slate roof was added, along with copper flashing and gutters.
